SOLAR ELECTRIC

Solar Electricity, commonly called "Photovoltaic" or "PV", is a companion technology to solar thermal, NOT a competitive technology. PV systems provide electricity for lighting, pumps, motors, TV's... things that cannot be done thermally. Because solar thermal produces 4 times as much energy per square foot and per dollar invested, one would never use solar electricity to heat things like pools or hot water... it would cost much more. It is our view that all homes need and eventually will have both thermal and electric systems.

Solar thermal and solar electric systems do compete in one way: over available roof area. The criteria regarding solar collector locations of each are similar, but far from identical.
